Newcomer's Guide
In the SCA we study all aspects of the Middle Ages, including but not limited to, calligraphy, heraldry, cooking, textile arts, metal working, dance, armoring, wood working, archery, fencing, and heavy fighting.
So what do people in the SCA do?
Events are a big part of the SCA. An event is any of the several types of planned gatherings hosted by local groups. During an event we try to recreate the flavor of medieval life. Usually they last a weekend, though some larger events can last up to a week or more.

The activities include fighting in tournaments or battles, contests in various fields, classes, games, and performances. Usually on at least one night there is a medieval feast and a court during which awards or prizes can be presented. The evening commonly ends with singing of period songs, poems and some period dancing.
So what kind of clothes do I wear?
The clothing worn at events is also know as Garb. Newcomers are not expected to have full garb, so any attempt is appreciated. Often you can find someone close to your size in the local group who is willing to lend you garb until you can get your own. A simple T-tunic and sweat pants (no jeans please) will work for men. A peasant blouse and a full skirt will do for women.
